If you are around us, you will hear us encouraging our boys to be dangerous. We purposefully try to NOT say, “Be careful.” While we don’t want them to get hurt, we also don’t want them to fear life. My three boys deserve my very best as a Father and Man.

Robert Lewis is really onto something here! John Eldridge, in Wild at Heart, talks about the systematic and comprehensive "demasculinization" of society. Boys are taught from a young age that they're not to act like boys. At the same time, our society praises the objectification of women and, through popular media, imply that manhood is something that is defined by the woman at your side. What a complete and ludicrous statement! Our boys don't ever have a transition - so we have a bunch of fully grown male homo sapiens that haven't stepped into their role as men.
I highly recommend this one to every dad and every son out there. Still, I appreciated this book and hope to use it as I'm training my son. Having rituals for our sons to pass into manhood is a lost art. Lewis does a great job with the call to action to start making investments in our sons.

This is helpful if you will be making something from scratch and want to find the right symbol/color to depict your vision of manhood. The Engineer is purposefully investing in his sons and let me tell you, it has had trickle down effects into many aspects of our family life. It was easy to read and full of practical current and historic examples, as well as a lot of personal background from the author himself. There are some good illustrations, as well as some good food for thought in this book.
It is also a very challenging book, because regardless of what a parent says, it is the example set by a parent that children typically follow. In this book, the author shares that no one ever told him when he officially became a man or what it meant. He and his friends were inspired to create an experience for their sons, akin to the journey a boy took to become a knight. This book shares their story, examples of what they did, and ways that you could do the same.
Lewis also designs the book around four major "ceremonies" that he believes one might give their son. He defends the importance of ceremony for a man and gives PLENTY of examples to use or get your own creative juices flowing. My favorite line was "Live pure. Speak truth. Defend the right. Honor the King." An additional concept that some might challenge in Lewis' plan for modern-day knights, is his focus on loving a woman. In my own life, loving my wife has defined much of who I am as a man, but I'm not sure that every man will find the love of a woman as a key component of his service to Christ. I hope that as our boys grow up, they can become like knights - men that we are proud to have parented, that we can turn to and honestly say, "I'm very pleased with you."
A group of guys met from our church, and really from our community. The group setting was pretty informal. I think for Raising a Modern Day Knight — they actually watched the video series and worked through the journal that accompanies the book. Robert Lewis’ book was excellent and I can’t wait to start to partner with other dads, raising boys to men.
Time to dust this book off and re-read it. This is an excellent book detailing how to raise a boy to become a man, following in the example of Jesus Christ. It shows intentional steps one can take to facilitate this process.
The author presented several compelling concepts - how does a Man know when he is a man. I found this to be a powerful concept. I also really liked the idea of writing a code for boys to understand what it means to be a man, and to “train to it” while growing up. Knights are the example the writer teaches his son, who took boys as squires since 13 and used them to fetch them things and later taught them how to fight.
